Sustainability at Wildwood Eco Retreat

living off-grid

When people hear "off-grid", they sometimes imagine roughing it. For us, it means something completely different!

Wildwood runs entirely on sunshine. During the day, our solar panels power the retreat, while large batteries store enough energy to keep everything running after the sun goes down. Even during regional power outages, Wildwood keeps operating.

We've also designed our accomodation to stay naturally comfortable, using fresh air, shade and clever orientation to reduce the need for heating and cooling.

rain harvesting

Water is one of our most precious resources, so we've designed Wildwood to be as self-sufficient as possible.

We collect rainwater and also access naturally filtered groundwater from a deep underground water source known as an aquifer.

Before it reaches your tap, every drop passes through advanced UV filtration, providing clean, fresh drinking water without chlorine or harsh chemicals.

By combining rainwater harvesting with our aquifer, we're better prepared for dry summers, so our guests can still have long, hot baths under the stars!

caring for the land

When we bought Wildwood, much of the property was covered in old tree stumps from its plantation days.

Rather than burning them, we turned them back into mulch which have now become Wildwood's pathways!

We don't use herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilisers, allowing the land to regenerate while creating a healthier home for wildlife. Every year we continue planting, restoring and caring for this special place.

Sharing Our Home with Wildlife

Wildwood is home to kangaroos, endangered Black Cockatoos, boobook owls and an incredible variety of native birdlife. To help guests connect with nature, each accommodation includes binoculars, world leading Ornothologist Dr Simon Cherriman's book 'Hollowed Out'  and a Wildlife Checklist, making it easy to discover the wildlife around you.

Working alongside Dr Cherriman, we've also created the Wildwood Cocky Trough—a safe watering station for endangered Black Cockatoos. Guests can scan the QR code at the trough to learn about these remarkable birds and how they can help protect them.

SUPPORTING LOCAL

One of the best parts of travelling is discovering local people and local products.

That's why many of the things you'll enjoy during your stay—from your coffee, tea and  wine to your grazing platter and handcrafted Experience Boxes—come from businesses right here in the Margaret River Region.

Supporting local helps strengthen our community while giving guests a genuine taste of the place we call home.

connecting with nature

We believe nature works best when you slow down. That's why your Wildwood experience begins with a walk through the bush rather than driving straight to your accommodation.

Feed Woody and Whiskey, collect fresh eggs, soak beneath the stars, breathe deeply in the Steam Lodge or simply sit quietly on your deck and listen to the birds.

Sometimes doing less is exactly what we need most.
